A UKIP MEP who failed to attend two University THINK! seminars on immigration has been suspended from the party.

The news comes after yesterday’s Sun report claimed Janice Atkinson, the party’s European representative for the South East, knew about her chief of staff’s alleged ‘bogus bill’ at The Hoy restaurant in Margate, Kent.

The tabloid uploaded video footage to their website this afternoon purporting to show Atkinson’s aide-de-camp, Ms Hewitt, discussing a payment arrangement with the venue’s manager.

The report alleges Hewitt paid over £900 for lunch at UKIP’s spring conference with her credit card, later coming back to accept a second bill of £3,150 that she intended to declare back from Brussels funds.

Nigel Farage told listeners on BBC Radio Kent: “It looks bad. It looks very bad. It couldn’t look worse. I’m astonished by it frankly.”

Kent Police said they were launching an official investigation into fraudulent activity this afternoon.

Atkinson missed rearranged dates for the University’s controversial immigration seminar in both February and March due to illness.
