Leading academics will be assessing the successes and failures of the current coalition government at a special 50th anniversary event tonight in Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall.
The event, called “Coalition: Devil’s pact or dream match?” will predict the possible outcomes of the general election this year. Experts from the University’s Departments of Government and Sociology, Professor Todd Landman, Professor Robin Blackburn and Professor Anthony King, will be joined by the RT Hon. Bernard Jenkin, MP for Harwich and North Essex. Joe Greenwood, an Essex PhD student, YouGov research executive and contributor to The Guardian, will accompany them.
Both departments have achieved international acclaim in recent years, with the Government Department ranking first in the world for politics in December. Attendees can expect intellectual debate to ensue concerning the success of the coalition. Those heading the panel plan to question whether the Conservative and Liberal Democrat leadership has proved the setup can work in the UK, and if parliament will look similar after the general election.
The 50th anniversary event is part of a week-long series of discussions organised to showcase the successes of the social sciences at the University.
If interested, book your tickets fast. The University’s Communications Office announced yesterday that this particular event is likely to be very popular and places are limited. The debate will take place at 7pm tonight (Wednesday 4 Feburary) in Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall at our Colchester campus. Go to essex.ac.uk/fifty for further information.
