A boy of sixteen has tonight been charged with the murders of Nahid Almanea and James Attfield on the authority of the Crown Prosecution Service.

He will appear before Chelmsford Magistrates Court at 10am tomorrow (Saturday May 30).

Detective Supt Steve Worron, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said:

“We have received excellent backing throughout the investigations into both James and Nahid’s deaths from the whole community in Colchester and I would like to thank them all again for their continued support.

“We are continuing our enquiries and if anyone believes they have any information relating to either James or Nahid’s deaths I would ask them to contact us as soon as possible.”

The 16-year-old was taken into police custody just after 11am on Tuesday after it was found he was carrying an offensive weapon along the Salary Brook Trail in Greenstead, Colchester.

Police presence along the trail, where Ms Almanea was stabbed sixteen times last June on her way to the University of Essex, has increased in recent days.

James Attfield was walking home from the River Lodge pub in Middleborough when he was fatally stabbed over 100 times in Lower Castle Park in the early hours of 28 March in 2014.

Following enquiries by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, police arrested the boy on suspicion of double murder late on Wednesday.
