In a bid to highlight the amount of great sports on campus, Rebel Editors Lois and Jason are trying out a new activity each week.

We will be trying as many as possible (so you don’t have to) and bringing you our recommendations. Look out for short reviews, pictures of us making fools of ourselves and some of Essex’s more obscure sports and classes!

First thing’s first; I didn’t think I was cool enough for yoga as the only experience I’d ever had was on the Nintendo Wii circa 2012 and if that isn’t proof enough then I don’t know what is. I am yet to perfect the messy bun, my workout wear is more tailored for a ballet class and I don’t shop at Whole Foods. But none of this mattered and I realised this almost as soon as I stepped into the Hex for Lydia’s Yoga class on Friday.

Lydia Tivenan, a bubbly third year student, is one of a few student Yoga and Meditation instructors who run classes almost daily. Regardless of experience we were welcomed into the class, and quickly encouraged to take a mat into the centre of the Hex. What I really liked about the session was that it was faster paced than I had imagined Yoga to be. We weren’t left waiting between moves which helped keep the interest of the more experienced yogis in the group. A whole variety of moves were covered, including Sun Salutations, Downward Dog, Baby Cobra (my personal favourite for the name alone!) and each were explained as the lesson progressed.

What I found helpful were the breathing exercises at the beginning and end of the session- taking deep, controlled breaths is ideal for de-stressing and restoring a positive mental attitude. I left the 50 minute lesson feeling calm, stretched and far bendier than normal!

Key things to note:

  • Don’t expect to leave feeling as though you have just completed a circuit in the gym- this is a completely different form of exercise and will therefore have different benefits; Yoga is much more focused on wellbeing and toning, not burning calories.
  • Take a bottle of water- you’ll need it!
  • You’ll leave feeling like you want to up sticks to Thailand with your yoga mat and new-found calmness. Don’t blame me if you spent the next week dreaming of far-away beaches and meditation at dawn. You’ve been warned!
