The co-pilot of Germanwings flight 4U 9525 could have spiked Capt. Sondheimer’s drink with a dieuretic drug, German media reported today.

The Express, a Cologne-based regional newspaper, claims that the co-pilot mixed the drug into his pilot’s coffee, forcing the captain to leave the cockpit to go to the restroom. This report follows speculation based on popular media theories suggesting 27-year-old Lubitz had used the internet to search for information on such drugs prior to the crash.

French prosecutors have said the voice recording in one of the black boxes found among the plane wreckage reveals the captain was unable to re-enter the cockpit due to Lubitz locking the door. Officials claim this is when Lubitz escalated the plane’s descent to crash into the mountains, killing all 150 passengers and crew on board the flight to Dusseldorf. A memorial service for the deceased will be held in Cologne Cathedral on 17 April.

German prosecutors have confirmed that in the weeks leading up to the crash, Lubitz had searched online for cockpit door locking systems and suicide methods. There has been a lot of speculative information surrounding the crash, including a recent theory from aviation expert Matt Anderson who claims the plane could have been electronically hacked. Anderson’s theory is one of the first to not place blame on Lubitz, but instead focuses on “any number of causes, including external electronic hacking into the aircraft’s control and navigation systems through malware or electromagnetic interception”.

The fact that Lubitz suffered from mental health issues has generated heavy media speculation. Airline company Lufthansa has been criticised for its relaxed regulations and mental health check-ups, as Lubitz was known to have been suffering from depression for several years before the crash on 24 March. German prosecutors have declined to comment on the new speculation that Lubitz used drugs to force the captain to leave the cockpit. More information obtained from the co-pilot’s seized computer is expected to be released this week.
